Shane Wilson's Grief Turned into a National Movement (Fishing's Future)
Shane Wilson is a lifelong educator, conservation leader, and nationally recognized advocate for family fishing and outdoor education. Over a career spanning more than three decades in public education, he developed a deep belief that strong families are the foundation of strong communities—an idea that now defines his life’s work.
As the founder and Chairman of Fishing's Future, established in 2007, Wilson has built a movement centered on using fishing as a powerful tool to bring families closer together. His programs are intentionally designed to create shared experiences between parents, children, and communities—encouraging communication, trust, and lasting bonds in a world where those connections are often strained. Under his leadership, the organization has reached more than 1.3 million participants and has been recognized as the nation’s leading angling education initiative.
Beauty from Ashes—The Birth of a Mission
In our walk with Christ, we often encounter seasons of profound darkness. For Shane Wilson, that moment was the loss of his infant son, Luke Cameron Wilson, who lived only 14 days. It was a pain that defies verbal definition, yet in this valley, God began to reveal a much larger picture.
Shane reflects on how this tragedy transformed his heart, teaching him the depth of empathy and a deeper understanding of the Father’s love. "Having lost a child... I understood a little bit of the pain, but the pain that the Lord must have felt or God must have felt when he was watching Jesus hang there... I can't even describe it," Shane shares.
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." — Romans 8:28
This loss was a beginning. About four months after Luke’s death, Shane attended the funeral of a cousin’s infant son. Moved by the Spirit, he whispered to the grieving mother that her son was "sitting on granddad's knee next to Luke and he's okay". Weeks later, she told him those words saved her life, stopping her from committing suicide. At that moment, Shane realized his purpose: to make others aware that Christ’s love supersedes all pain.
Fishing’s Future—Strengthening the Family Bond
Shane spent 28 years in the classroom, primarily teaching first grade—the grade he believes is the most vital foundation for a child. However, while directing an alternative program for "bad decision makers," he realized these children lacked the active parental engagement he had enjoyed growing up.
In 2007, Shane founded Fishing’s Future. The mission was never just about making new anglers; it was about teaching parents how to spend quality time with their children in nature. He describes fishing as a "strong glue" for a family, similar to the family meals of his youth.
The organization’s logo—two interlocking lowercase "Fs" that form a fish—stands for Families Forever. By teaching parents and children to tie knots and bait hooks together, Shane helps families reclaim the "quality time" often lost to the distractions of the modern world.
The "I Can" Initiative—Leading with Compassion
After reaching one million participants in 2018, Shane asked the Lord, "Where do I go now?". The answer led him to serve those often overseen: the mobility-disabled and those with special needs.
He created the "I Can" initiative and built a 26-foot custom boat designed specifically for individuals in wheelchairs or medical beds. Shane challenged a friend in a wheelchair to help build it; when the friend said, "I can't," Shane responded, "Dude, you can," and made him the boat's first captain.
The stories of the "I Can" boat are holy moments: a non-verbal nine-year-old with cerebral palsy captaining the vessel through eye-tracking technology, and a child who couldn't use his hands "kissing" the fish to feel them with his mouth. This is Shane’s leadership in action—entirely focused on being the hands and feet of Jesus to those the world forgets.
Servant Leadership—The Vessel and the Shell
Despite national accolades and fishing with President George H.W. Bush, Shane remains a "normal guy from Indiana". His leadership style is rooted in radical humility. He describes himself not as the architect of success, but as a "shell" for the Holy Spirit.
"I don't want people to see Shane Wilson when they see Shane Wilson. I want them to see Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit coming from my eyes."
Shane understands that pride can turn a ministry into an idol. He emphasizes that everyone can be used by God if they have the faith to let go. By making Jesus the goal—rather than the growth of the nonprofit—he has found a peace that surpasses worldly success. As he puts it, "I'm just a vessel... looking to be used by the Lord Jesus Christ".
Anchoring Hope—A Legacy of Faith
As Shane looks to the future, his focus remains on the "one more cast"—the hope that every moment in nature can lead someone closer to the Creator. He reminds us that while the world is full of doubt (which he calls the "devil trying to separate us"), our faith must remain unshakable because "Christ will not lie to you".
"Christ is our anchor," Shane declares. For him, fishing is a metaphor for the Christian walk: a series of hopeful acts, trusting that the Lord will provide. He chooses happiness every day, not because life is easy, but because he has Jesus.
Shane Wilson’s legacy is not just in the 1.3 million participants he has reached, but in the families restored and the souls reminded that they are loved by a perfect Father. He is a fisher of men, teaching us all that when we let Christ lead, our purpose becomes clear, and our hope becomes an anchor for the soul.

“I don’t want people to see Shane Wilson when they see Shane Wilson. I want them to see Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit coming from my eyes. ... I’m a shell. I’m a want. And everybody can do this, David. Everybody can do this. Uh they just need to have that faith.”
